Description
Russian Tortoise Juveniles and Adults (Agrionemys horsfieldii)
The Russian tortoise is native to regions of Kazakhstan (former Soviet Union), Afghanistan, Northern Pakistan, Iran, and North Western China where it normally lives in dry open areas such as sand or clay deserts with sparse grasses and bushes. During winter, wild Russian tortoises will hibernate for long periods of time (up to 9 months). In captivity, they typically will hibernate for 2 to 3 months at a time in temperatures down to about 40 degrees Fahrenheit. For climates that seasonally fall below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, an inside and/or insulated enclosure will be required. When not in hibernation, their daytime temperature range should run from at least 70 degrees or above during daylight and above 60 degrees at night. These tortoises will do well in many areas of the US. Full size are typically no more than 10 inches for females and 8 inches for males. Their enclosure needs to accommodate their tendency to dig and climb. Given their ease of care and small size, these are a good tortoise choice. When properly cared for, they will provide a lifetime of enjoyment.
NOTE: Must be 18+ years old to order. Please check your state and local laws concerning captive species before ordering. Turtles and tortoises under 4 inches are sold for scientific, educational, and exhibition purposes only.
