The Hermann’s tortoise is native to southern Europe including areas of Spain, Southern France and Western Italy where it lives in Mediterranean meadows/forests. During winter, Hermann’s will hibernate and tolerate temperatures down to about 40 degrees Fahrenheit. For colder climates, an inside and/or insulated enclosure is required. When not in hibernation, their daytime temperature range should run from 70 degrees or above with above 60 degrees at night. These tortoises will do well in many areas of the US and remain outdoors throughout the year in our Florida facilities. They are attractively colored with a highly arched shell and at full size are less than 7 inches. Though small, their enclosure needs to accommodate their tendency to dig and climb. Given their ease of care and small size, these are a good tortoise choice. When properly cared for, they will provide a lifetime of enjoyment.

As adults these are small to medium tortoises attaining between 12-15 inches.

The Marginated tortoise is native to Greece and a few other regions of Southern Europe where it lives in arid regions and, oftentimes, in high mountainous areas. It is the largest European tortoise. When kept outside, marginated tortoises typically require temperatures to be no less than 40 degrees Fahrenheit overnight except during winter hibernation during which they must be kept above freezing. When not in hibernation, their habitat should provide for a temperature of at least 70 degrees for a portion of the daylight hours. These tortoises will do well in many areas of the US. At full size, they typically grow to about 14 inches. Their enclosure needs to accommodate their tendency to dig and climb. Given their ease of care and small size, these are a good tortoise choice. When properly cared for, they will provide a lifetime of enjoyment

Elongated Tortoise Hatchling

(Indotestudo Elongata)

The Elongated Tortoise is native to Northeastern India, and portions of Southeast Asia and Malaysia. Their natural habitat includes tropical forests as well as hilly regions and plateaus. The Florida climate, where we keep our breeders and their captive bred offspring, provides a good substitute environment for these tortoises. They will not do well in colder climates and, even in Florida, require heated habitats during seasonably cold periods. These tortoises can be raised along with redfoots and/or yellowfoots with very similar feed and care needs. Wild caught imports should typically be avoided as these may not acclimate well to new environments and parasites will often be present.

As their name indicates, these tortoises are typically twice as long as they are wide. Also, their shells can be considerably depressed. With their unique and distinctive appearance, their typical full size of about 12 inches, and ease of care, these rare tortoises are an excellent choice for many years of enjoyment.
