Russian Tortoise Juveniles and Adults (Agrionemys horsfieldii)

The Russian tortoise is native to regions of Kazakhstan (former Soviet Union), Afghanistan, Northern Pakistan, Iran, and North Western China where it normally lives in dry open areas such as sand or clay deserts with sparse grasses and bushes. During winter, wild Russian tortoises will hibernate for long periods of time (up to 9 months). In captivity, they typically will hibernate for 2 to 3 months at a time in temperatures down to about 40 degrees Fahrenheit. For climates that seasonally fall below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, an inside and/or insulated enclosure will be required. When not in hibernation, their daytime temperature range should run from at least 70 degrees or above during daylight and above 60 degrees at night. These tortoises will do well in many areas of the US. Full size are typically no more than 10 inches for females and 8 inches for males. Their enclosure needs to accommodate their tendency to dig and climb. Given their ease of care and small size, these are a good tortoise choice. When properly cared for, they will provide a lifetime of enjoyment.

Cherryhead Tortoise Adults (Chelonoidis carbonaria)

The Cherryhead tortoise is a subspecies of the Redfoot tortoise. Redfoot (Red footed) tortoise is native to areas of Central America and northern South America where it lives in tropical grasslands and forest edges of the Amazon Basin. The Florida climate, where we keep our breeders and their captive bred offspring, provides a good substitute environment for these tortoises. As they are also quite adaptable to varying climate conditions, they can be maintained in more northern areas but will need to be kept inside a heated area during winter or other cold periods (e.g., temperatures below 45 degrees Fahrenheit). With their attractive appearance, typical full size of about 12-14 inches, and ease of care, these are our most popular tortoise choice. When properly cared for, they will provide a lifetime of enjoyment.

Our Redfoot breeders openly graze for much of their dietary needs. This is augmented with fresh greens, succulent plants, Opuntia Cactus, and various fruits (e.g., bananas and mangos). Adults also receive a small amount of protein (commercially packaged turtle food, broken down with water) to augment their predominantly vegetable diet. Hatchlings are fed similarly with very little or no protein.
